Amazon Supply Chain

The evolution of Amazon’s distribution systems and supply chain The evolution of Amazon’s supply chain and distribution systems in the United States was caused by several internal and external forces. First of all, the sales rate of this company rose significantly, and this organization had to improve its capacity to process the orders that customers placed.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Amazon’ Supply Chain specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Secondly, Amazon faced the competition of such retailing companies as Barnes Noble or CDNow. Amazon’s responded to these problems by increasing the number of items that it sold to customers and improving its internal operations. This strategy required the development of supply chain and distribution systems. On the whole, one can argue that Amazon acts as a part of two-tier distribution network distribution when there are intermediaries betw een manufacturers and customers. Amazon has established partnerships with wholesalers and some of the most important publishers. It is possible to use a diagram to illustrate American distribution network of Amazon This diagram shows that Amazon can be regarded as a second-tier company that does not deal directly with producers. They interact primarily with various wholesalers that provide Amazon with a variety of goods. At the beginning, when Amazon was only a book retailer, the company attempted to procure books directly from publishers, but these organizations could not ensure the fast delivery of goods. Additionally, one can say that Amazon pays close attention to the performance of its distribution centers. Moreover, the company makes significant investments its information system that ensured the fast delivery of goods to the customers. The inventory management policy of the company The inventory management policy of Amazon has several distinctive elements that are aimed at r educing the operational costs. For example, one can speak about such a technique drop-ship orders which means that wholesalers delivers goods directly to buyers without storing them at the distribution centers of Amazon.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Additionally, Amazon has a set of rules according to which various wholesalers are evaluated. The most important evaluation criteria are the delivery options and the price. Overall, their policy is aimed at reducing the volume of goods that are stored directly at the distribution centers of Amazon. This approach is quite suitable for the needs of a large online retailer that has to sell a variety of goods. There are several models that can be partly applicable to Amazon. In particular, one can speak abo ut Economic Order Quantity or EOQ model. This model is based on a formula which enables a company to estimate the quantity of goods that a company should hold in order to avoid two extremes, oversupply and shortage of good. Amazon does apply software solutions that help to estimate the demand for a certain product. Nonetheless, one should note that EOQ approach has several limitations. It is based on the assumption each supplier meets its schedule and that the demand curve does not have significant deviations. However, these requirements are not always met. Another approached adopted by companies is a saw-tooth inventory model. According to it, the company’s stores should be replenished at certain intervals; moreover, these intervals can be accurately estimated. Yet, this approach is not quite relevant to Amazon, because this organization relies on the quick transfer of data from customers to suppliers, rather than the estimation of demand. Another strategy that can be discus sed is periodic inventory management. According to it, managers should count the items stored at a warehouse and compare their findings with the receipts or electronic data. In this way, they can determine whether there are goods that have been taken into account. This method can be relevant to a company like Amazon since this organization operates a variety of distribution centers and it is possible that there databases were not properly updated. The problems that Amazon faced in Europe There were several supply management issues that Amazon faced when it began to operate in the European market. First of all, the number of wholesalers in Europe was much smaller, especially in comparison with the United States. For instance, one can mention that in Germany there was only one book wholesaler. Thus, it means that this organization could easily dictate its terms to Amazon. In order to mitigate this risk the company established many partnerships with publishers and distributors. Secondl y, Amazon had to ensure the speed of delivery in order to gain the loyalty of European customers.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Amazon’ Supply Chain specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is why the management of Amazon decided to cooperate with national postal services. These organizations functioned very efficiently, especially in such countries, as England, France, or Germany. Nonetheless, a significant problem remained unaddressed, because these postal carriers were not effective in cross-border logistics. In effort to address these problems, Amazon enabled its customers to choose the distribution center from which the ordered goods could be delivered as soon as possible. These are the ways in which this company attempted to resolve the problems that it encountered in Europe. There were other challenges that were indirectly related to supply chain management. This company had to operate in count ries with different cultures and labor relations. The employees had to have knowledge of various suppliers that could operate in France, Germany, or England. For instance, they hired people, who had worked in the French media industry, in order to establish better relations with suppliers. PRM and CRM of Amazon The success of Amazon can in part be explained by its policies on customer relations management (CRM) and partner relations management (PRM). The first term refers to the practices that a company adopts in order to manage its relations with clients and retain them. In turn, the second term can be defined as a set of strategies that facilitate their interactions with suppliers or distributors. These tasks are of great importance to Amazon, because this organization has to make sure that customers could receive the purchased goods as quickly as possible; at the same time, they helped wholesale vendors or manufacturers better distribute their products. In order to improve its CR M and PRM the management had to find a way of integrating these activities and improve the flow of information between suppliers and clients. To a great extent, this goal was achieved through the use of EDI (Electronic Data Exchange). This system was used to transfer the information about the orders directly to the suppliers. When a person placed an order at Amazon, this application sends a request to one of suppliers and this organization could either confirm a request or reject it when a certain product is out of stock. On the whole, this interaction can be illustrated with the help of a diagram:Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Suppliers that can confirm a request or reject it One can argue that EDI system is supposed to act as an intermediary between suppliers and clients. Overall, this application is instrumental for sales automation of sales and effective interaction with clients who want to know whether Amazon has already processed their orders. Pull-push strategy Push-pull strategy is one of the concepts that play an instrumental role for marketing and supply chain management. The term push strategy means that a manufacturer or distributor makes an offer to the customer who can either accept or reject it. The main peculiarity of this approach is that a buyer is not able to contact the company and place an order. In contrast, push strategy means that a buyer first makes a request and only later his/her order is processed by producers or distributors. Each of these models has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, push strategy can often result in oversupply of materials and inventory, while pu ll strategy can make the company unable to meet the demand of the clients. These are the main factors that should be taken into account. Overall, one can argue that Amazon adopts a pull strategy and their work is demand-driven. There are several reasons why this organization adopted this strategy in the United States and abroad. The main factor is the inability to forecast the demand for goods. Admittedly, Amazon used software solution that could estimate approximate demand for product, but these tools were not always accurate. Secondly, this management of Amazon wanted to reduce its inventory levels to the minimum. This was possible only if the company adopted push strategy. Certainly, the policies of Amazon could be affected by other factors such as the number of wholesalers in a country or the level of demand. They had to increase the number of distribution centers in order to avoid the undersupply of goods. Nevertheless, in most cases, this organization relied on the pull strate gy. Facilitators in the Amazon’s supply chain One can identify several facilitators that improve the work of Amazon’s supply chain. In particular, special attention should be paid to the role of various software solutions that helped Amazon to process customers’ orders as quickly as possible. Secondly, it is important to speak about the presence of many distribution centers and warehouses. In this way, this retailer was able to decrease the time it took to deliver the order to buyers. One of the practices that Amazon can adopt is cross-docking. This term is used to describe a logistics method according to which the products are directly transferred by a manufacturer or wholesaler to the customer. In most cases, they are not stored or handled by a retailer. Additionally, this approach implies that goods are stored at distribution centers or warehouses for a minimum amount of time. In part, Amazon adopted this practice. If a wholesaler has an opportunity to reach the buyer, Amazon only provides this organization with the address of the client without handling or storing the product. This method helps Amazon to decrease the delivery time. Overall, the following diagram can better illustrate this interaction. Thus, Amazon often acts only as an intermediary and in such cases the operational costs of this company are reduced to the minimum. Yet, cross-docking is possible only when wholesalers and customers are located in one geographic area. In other cases, Amazon has to store and handle the purchased items. Skiing vs. Skating; Judgment Day.

Skiing vs. Skating; Judgment Day. Skiing vs. Skating; Judgment DaySkiing and skating are very different, but they are still the same in some ways too. Obviously skiing is much better, but there are pros and cons to both. In the following essay, skiing and skating will be contrasted using their similarities, and differences.Skiing and skating are both winter sports. This is a known similarity. They are both most commonly done in the winter specifically, between November and March, both can go a month either way sometimes depending on whether its snowing and whether people want to do it.Another similarity between skiing and skating is that they are both done in constant motion. This is obvious; skiing is done on a hill, while moving constantly, and speed checking on the way down. Skating is done on an ice rink, while propelling yourself with your legs, also in a constant motion.Although there are some similarities between skiing and skating, there are also differences; the fact that skiing and skating are not both done under the same conditions is a good example.English: Public outdoor Ice Skating outside St Mar...This is very obvious if you were to do both. Skating is done inside on a rink, usually inside, sometimes outside, but either way it's done on ice. Skiing however is done under much different conditions. Skiing is done outside, on a hill covered with snow. While skiing there is also wind, and snow a lot of the time. Where as in skating it is done either inside, where it is completely sheltered or outside, in a place sheltered by wind.In both sports there is equipment but obviously the equipment has to differ. The equipment in skiing is obviously used pertaining to the fact it's an outdoor sport. Usually you would wear a ski jacket, and ski pants, as...

Investigation About Forklift - Essay Example This essay stresses that the forklift operators must be trained and retrained time again so that they can always remember not to push or shove bins while workers are in front of the line, as this may trigger an accident. In addition, employees have to be keen while working at all times, in this case, if Tina was keen, she would have seen the forklift that is if she did not have her back turned. The forklift operator is normally trained and must have received a tool box talk on not pushing or shoving bins while workers are in front of the line. If proper disaster management were in place medical officers would have been in the place of incident at the right time. This can be attributed to poor event management. Moreover, an accident may be caused by unattended medical issues in employee’s body. This paper makes a conclusion that lack of educating the employees on the safety measures is one of the principal causes of the incident that happened to Mrs. Tina. The accident would be avoided if a proper education was carried out and proper safety equipment put in place. Also, the employees would be in a better place to handle Tina’s case if they had skills in first aid operations. Management should heavily invest in training its employees on the site’s safety program can only be successful when employees on the site receives sufficient training to comprehend what their safety responsibilities and opportunities are and how to fulfill them. Consequently, training forum is a high priority to ensure a safe workplace.

(a) How successful have the American Government and the U.S. Federal Essay

(a) How successful have the American Government and the U.S. Federal Reserve been in running the American economy over the last - Essay Example financial collapse took place during the very last days of the Bush administration and during a U.S. Presidential election. The Fed’s response can be viewed separately and as working in tandem with the political approach of both political administrations and Congress. The historical characteristics of the period preceding the crisis itself can be seen as related to the severity of the crisis, while the aftermath or recovery period can suggest projections about the future consequences of the policies referenced drawn from economic studies and historical parallels in order to illustrate the possible dangers to the macro-economic environment that remain for the global economy. In the period preceding the financial crisis of 2008-9, the major issue of importance is the real estate market, particularly the sub-prime mortgage market in America, and its lending standards which may have led to the creation of a real estate bubble in the country. By some analysts’ regard, the Cl inton administration encouraged Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to promote financing policies that made it very easy for even the lower income families to get mortgages for home purchases. This type of encouragement was related to a general deregulation of the financial industry that proceeded under both the Clinton and Bush administrations, which included repeal of Depression era statutes like the Glass-Steagall Act that regulated the trading and investment functions of banks. Ratings agencies oversaw the process through which the Wall St. investment banks packaged thousands of mortgages in both commercial and residential real estate contracts into massive, billion dollar bonds known as MBS (Mortgage Backed Securities) that could be sold by the investment banks to groups like pension funds or hedge funds who were interested in fixed-rate or adjustable-rate long term returns. The contagion of global markets is seen in the way that these MBS entered portfolios around the world of all mann er of different public and private sector investors, corporations, and banks. Risk management, as practiced not only by the investors who purchased these MBS but also by the ratings agencies, failed to recognize that these securities could fail in the manner that they did because they underestimated the deflationary aspects of real estate and overestimated the reliability of the lending standards at their basis. This is the â€Å"Black Swan† aspect of Nicholas Taleb’s analysis, who wrote: â€Å"Globalization creates interlocking fragility, while reducing volatility and giving the appearance of stability. In other words it creates devastating Black Swans. We have never lived before under the threat of a global collapse. Financial Institutions have been merging into a smaller number of very large banks. Almost all banks are interrelated. So the financial ecology is swelling into gigantic, incestuous, bureaucratic banks – when one fails, they all fall. The increas ed concentration among banks seems to have the effect of making financial crises less likely, but when they happen they are more global in scale and hit us very hard. We have moved from a diversified ecology of small banks, with varied lending policies, to a more homogeneous framework of firms that all resemble one another. True, we now have fewer failures, but when they occur †¦.I shiver at the thought.† (Taleb, 2010) If Wall St. planners, securities ratings agencies, and

Quality Management Tools & Techniques Research Paper

Quality Management Tools & Techniques - Research Paper Example This is what has necessitated then implementation of the quality management tool and technique. These tools play a very critical role in ensuring that the products that are produced are of high quality. At the same time they play a key role in management of the performance of the organization. The quality management tools Quality in production is very necessary to ensure competitiveness in the market. This is the basis for the seven management tools and technique. These techniques were first developed in Japan in the year 1960 and their application so the improvement of quality in production and ensure consistency in the products produced. The tools uses statistical techniques to make sure that what comes out of the production house meets the end users need and requirements, as mention the tools are six in number. These tools are basically used to collect data then arrange it and finally do an analysis to the data. In doing so the information collected is organized in a way that is e asy to understand and this makes it possible to identify problems in the system (Hakes, C 203). Check sheet pareto chart Cause and effect diagram Histogram Scatter diagram Charts Check sheet This is a kind of sheet that is used to show variations over a period of time. The variations are analyzed and can easily show the performance over that period. These charts can enable the organization to identify the problems before implementing new system because it is used at the end of a particular period or when there is need for change of system. Therefore it can play a very critical role in ensuring that the new system does not have the same problems as the other system had. This has been used in my case the footwear industry in the analysis of its production after every end of a year. The records are analyzed and the necessary decisions taken to improve production. In my analysis of the records I find out that at most cases the production increased after the implementation of new systems . Here is an example of a check sheet Pareto chart This is a chart that prioritizes issues. It is used to analyze problems by basically showing the most frequent issue. In this type of a chart the issue that has the most appearance comes first in the chart then the other issues follow in that order to the list. The chart can be very critical in an organization since it can be used to identify what problems are occurring in the organization frequently, and as such seek for the solution to this problem. The chart does not only show the problem but it also shows the cause of that problem so in an organization it can be used to tackle some of the frequently experienced problems that the organization face from time to time and seek a solution to them. Just looking at my case, an interview with the Footwear industry management on how they have found this chart important amazed me. I found out that for the period of the ten years they have been applying this chart to identify the problems in their production and they have found it very effective. Below is an example of a Pareto chart. The cause and effect diagram This chart is also popularly known as the fish born. This arises from the way the diagram is designed that is, the diagram has the main bar then there are line

Hitler - A Method to His Madness Essay -- Essays Papers

Hitler - A Method to His Madness The Holocaust found its origins in Hitler's deep rooted hatred of the Jewish Society. This quote from Hitler's diary is an example of his feelings toward Jews... "The Jew has never founded any civilization, though he has destroyed hundreds. He must spread as a disease spreads. Already he has destroyed Russia; now it is the turn of Germany and, with his envious instinct for destruction he seeks to disintegrate the national spirit of the Germans and to pollute their blood." 1 Hitler believed that there was one race with a "natural advantage"2 over the others, and this race was the Aryans. He drew many of his Nazi ideas from Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who questioned traditional morality. Nietzsche and Hitler thought that Western society was decaying. They also felt that Christianity was weakening the the influence humanity's free will. In addition, they believed that passion and emotion were obstacles to obtaining rational thinking. These radical ideas led to a call for a super-race by using selective breeding to achieve ethnic cleansing. This plan of selective breeding included extermination. With Hitler's perverted mind and his execution of his ideals of superiority, nothing less than the Holocaust could have been expected. To achieve racial extermination, Hitler put the ideas of Nietzsche into motion. He saw the Aryans as a race above all others. Since blond hair and blue eyes were seen as superior, it was the duty of the Aryans to "enslave the lesser races-- such as the Slavs so that it could continue to push forward the boundaries of human achievement".3 Hitler began his work with the Nuremberg race laws of 1935. Research Report Proposal Essays - Employment, Free Essays Research Report Proposal Workplace Health and Safety in the Workplace By DHRUV PATEL 300856248 GNED 219 - 004 Submitted to: Prof. Philip Alalibo October 9, 2015 Proposal: 1. Description of the Subject: - Workplace health and safety is one of the biggest concern in Canadian workplace that has affected many Canadian lives. It is the major obstacle for the employers to cope up with as it is the primary responsibility of the employers to ensure their worker's health and safety. It takes combined efforts of both employers and workers to ensure that the workplace is safe and effective steps are evolving to prevent any or every incident. Research Statement: - Workplace Health and Safety: A challenge for employer Our topic "Impacts of Immigration" and "Impacts of Technology in Canadian workplace" directly or indirectly addresses the issue of workplace health and safety in the workplace. Canada is a multicultural country as we welcome thousands of immigrants every year. Immigrants think of Canada as prime modem of safer and economically stable country to ensure their subtle future. Mainly, because Canada offers a huge range of employment in compare to any other country and also multiculturalism. If the employer won't tackle the issue of sa fety and health, it not only would affect their business but Canadian economy as well. In general, not only immigrants but Canadians will no longer feel safe to work in the environment that is hazardous to them. On the other hand, Technology plays a pivotal role in ensuring workplace health and safety. Employers are bringing in more and more machines to increase productivity. While in contrast, it could also create a threat for the workers as often big and heavy machines comes with ample of wirings and knife-sharped tools which can easily add up to a critical injury in the workplace. The debate around health and safety in workplace is mainly revolves employers and ministry of health and safety. Both prime concern is worker's health and safety. Employers must ensure health and safety of each and every individual that work for them. Employer should always promote safety agenda to prevent incidents. They must encourage workers to opt out for insurance to cover all of their health issues that are not covered by the Health Canada which includes prescriptions as well. Safety meet should be organized every month or two and hear problems from both end's . Workplace essentials such as safety shoes, garments etc . should be mandatory and remain the responsibility of both worker and employer to ensure that. The civil argument over obligatory representative medication testing as a method for guaranteeing that working environments are medication and liquor free proceeds in this nation, especially in security delicate segments, and generally as an after effect of impact from the United States, where such testing is a great deal more common. Those for required medication testing in the work environment for the most part depend intensely on contentions with respect to wellbeing, security and efficiency. It is attested, for instance, that individuals who test decidedly for medications and liquor in the work environment have higher rates of non-appearance and poorer occupation execution than different representatives and that they represent a risk to working environment, and now and again even open, security. Then again, the individuals who solidly contradict medication testing trust that, while the objective of a sound, sheltered and gainful workplace is commendable, required testing claims excessively incredible a social expense. Specific accentuation is set on the way that medication testing is an encroachment of an individual's real uprightness and his or her entitlement to protection. It is additionally affirmed that medication testing projects victimize people on the premise of a real or saw incapacity. The in quiry then emerges in the matter of whether a parity can be struck between the sympathy toward open and work environment wellbeing and the sympathy toward individual protection and human rights. On the other hand, this inquiry presupposes that a huge business related medication and liquor issue exists in this nation and that medication testing is the best method for battling it . 2. Impact of sexual abuse on children Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Impact of sexual abuse on children - Essay Example It also establishes the effect of gender of the abused on the perpetration of sexual abuse (151). This study is important in psychology because it contributed to the expansion of the knowledge in the field and strengthened the theories on previous researches on the psychological effects sexual abuse has upon children and adolescents. The children have low regard on themselves or hostile and aggressive. Their behaviors manifest on both extremes. They are also afflicted with â€Å"negative developmental outcomes† such as depression, low self-esteem, anger, promiscuity, etc. (152). Sexual abuse affects the mental outlook of the abused towards themselves, other people, the institutions and society in general, especially for those who experienced it regularly or for a longer duration (152-153). Interview is a qualitative approach used in social sciences, but it is the primary research method utilized in gathering data for this study. However, the data gathered from the subjects wer e analyzed using quantitative parameters. Thus, it can be said that the research design used both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The quantitative approach is used to quantify the information gathered from the subjects (e.g. frequency of commission).
